comment This chapter presents the interview study and its findings. It discusses the impact of communication barriers on the employment and careers of deaf college graduates, and suggestions regarding the role of postsecondary education in facilitating accommodation of deaf people within the work place. Graduates found themselves in a 'Catch-22' regarding communication in the work place. On the one hand, many said the responsibility for communication rests with the deaf employee, since they are expected to teach hearing co-workers about communication strategies, set the ground rules for accommodations, break the ice during awkward moments, and request clarification when necessary. On the other hand, there is always a sense of dependency on hearing co-workers, since most communication strategies require their sustained cooperation and good will. One-to-one conversation is facilitated when everyone is aware of the communication needs of the deaf employee and motivated to make the interaction a success.
