IfI had a nickel for how every time I have heard this sentence from deaf clients of hearing families, I would be a rich man. Sue's story was no different. I nodded my head in the best sympathetic, supportive manner I could muster. Out of as much clinical habit as a trusted conversation opener, I commented that it must have been tough and asked her to tell me more. However, Sue, perhaps also out of habit, responded that it was no big deal and that she had "gotten used to it." Born profoundly deaf, she had become numb to missing the day-to-day (oral) conversations among her mom, dad, and three brothers during her childhood. She was now 42 years old. |
